WHY
Violence against women knows no borders. The 16 days
of Activism Campaign on Violence against Women over the past many years has
established the all pervasive nature of VAW. The need for comprehensive and
multidisciplinary state policy measures and resources has been highlighted.
Money matters. Gender equality cannot be done on the cheap. While
these campaigns have highlighted the role of boys and men as perpetrators of
violence, not many attempts have been made to engage them as part of the
solution or involve them as active agents and partners in the struggle to curb
gender based violence.
Boys and men as partners for prevention
One rationale for this focus is that most violence is perpetrated by men, and thus can be stopped by men. In addition, most political leaders, local authorities and religious leaders – those in better positions to influence change – are also men. Yet, men have been conspicuously missing from most violence prevention efforts in the region. As such, boys and men represent a largely untapped and under-utilized resource in the struggle to curb violence. This programme will focus on men's agency for prevention and highlight the benefits of ending violence for societies and for men and boys themselves. Boys and men can play a vital role as partners to prevent violence. This programme has a specific focus on engaging men and boys as partners in prevention, and will make use of a growing set of good practices in this area. [1].
