UNIFEM South Asia and the SAARC Secretariat sign a MOU, Dec. 2001

UNIFEM South Asia and the SAARC Secretariat signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 31st December 2001, after receiving concurrence of the Governments of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It was signed jointly by the RPD and the SAARC Secretary General at a special ceremony with the Standing Committee of SAARC representing all the seven countries of South Asia and the SAARC Secretariat. The MoU marks the culmination of the coming together of a very high level of will and commitment from the highest bridgeheads in this region - the SAARC Secretariat and governments of South Asia, in a formal partnership with UNIFEM. This has given a great impetus to gender issues in the region and further enhanced UNIFEMís visibility. The SAARC Secretary General and the Governments of South Asia, commended UNIFEMís role and initiative, paying high tribute to its work, its role and credibility. The MoU is grounded on the Charter of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and the Mandate of UNIFEM and its role and mission. It aims to help member countries in their efforts to achieve the goals of Gender Equality in terms of the Beijing Platform for Action and the Beijing + Five Outcome Document. Providing a mechanism for regional cooperation and collaboration, the MoU also promotes mutual learning and cross-fertilization
